Deputy then sheriff; granted Stanleigh 1190
Pipe Rolls from 1168 to 1185 place Adam in the King's local government as deputy and then sheriff. This is the professional ascent: loyalty to an overlord converted into office.
In 1190 Bertram de Verdun, departing on the Third Crusade with Richard I, granted the manor of Stanleigh to Adam. Bertram died at Joppa in 1192 and never returned. The vacuum of a crusading lord is when cousins rearrange earth.
Around 1192 Adam's cousin William exchanged Talk on the Hill for Stanleigh and took the surname de Stanleigh. The cadet branch is born. The senior line remains Audley.
