A minor Audley branch
The Sneyds sit in the heraldic visitations of Staffordshire as a cadet of the Audleys — the same dirt, a younger job of work. They do not receive the 1313 writ. They keep a name that will later pun itself into a coat of arms, and they keep enough paper that Keele University can still be asked for it.
This is a cadet house: useful because it is adjacent to Heighley, dangerous if it is pleaded as the barony. A visitation is not a writ. A meadow next to Audley is not Heighley Castle.

The scythe that says the name
Sneyd / sned: a scythe. English heraldry loves a visual pun. The Sneyd achievement charges a scythe so a clerk who cannot spell the family can still see it. Beside the blade, a fleur-de-lys — claimed as a battle honour for an ancestor who fought at Poitiers in 1356 beside James, 2nd Baron Audley, KG.
That lily is an affidavit of proximity to the most decorated holder of the 1313 writ. It is not a marshalling of the gold fret. The Sneyds did not quarter Gules a fret or. They stood near the man who did, and they said so in flowers.

Poitiers as borrowed honour
James, 2nd Baron Audley, fought under the Black Prince at Poitiers and took the Garter. The Sneyd cadet later points at that field with a fleur-de-lys. Heraldry as memory. Heraldry as a claim to have been in the room.
A petitioner reading Keele is not reading a second barony. She is reading a neighbour's scrapbook of the same war.

Keele bought from the Crown
After the Hospitallers, the Crown sold Keele. The Sneyds bought it. The dirt had been Audley-adjacent meadow; it became a cadet seat. In 1580 Ralph Sneyd built the first Keele Hall.
This is the generation a petitioner can actually walk: a hall, building accounts, marriage settlements, uncalendared deeds. Keele University now keeps that archive on a campus that used to be the meadow. The scythe did not become a coronet. The paper survived the house.

Keele Hall, then a university
The Sneyds held Keele for four centuries. The last of them to reside in the hall was Colonel Ralph Sneyd — 'Sporting Ralph' — c. 1869–1949, Staffordshire Yeomanry, horse-breeder, three wives, died childless. The house passed out of the blood and into a university.
Childless is a legal fact the connecting line has to live with: the Keele Sneyds as a landed house end. The surname, and the American spelling of it, do not. A cadet can leave a hall and still leave a name.

How a Staffordshire name is written in the colonies
Snead is how Sneyd is sounded when a clerk on the other ocean writes it down. The same instinct as Gamel becoming Gamble in the Audley parish registers: onomastics as a forensic bridge, not a decoration.
Samuel Snead arrived in Virginia in 1635 with his wife and son William and took a grant of 250 acres in James City from Charles I. Alice Boyd is the mother on the documented walk between that crossing and Israel Snead of Louisa. Keziah Snead, Israel’s first-named daughter, marries William Watkins in Louisa County. That is the spelling-bridge into the Watkins trunk.

Keziah Snead of Louisa, Virginia, about 1732 to about 1802: daughter of Israel Snead and Johanna Hendley, wife of William (Willis) Watkins, first daughter named in Israel’s will. She signed her dower on the 1757 Louisa deed. Later of Richmond County, North Carolina.
Their children — Thomas, Sarah Jane, John Israel, William, Samuel, David, Israel, Elizabeth, Alexander, Agatha, Frances — carry the Watkins name forward. The family names Granberry Watkins as the connecting link. Public trees write Greenberry Watkins, 22 March 1827 to 21 August 1884, son of Benjamin Watkins and Sarah Lamb, husband of Nancy Caroline Cole, father of Benjamin Abner Watkins. Southern given-name variant of one man.

Cadet-colonial, not holder-descent
The Sneyd/Snead leg does not unseat the three daughters of Richard Souter, 25th Baron Audley of Heleigh, who died 27 June 1997. Heirs general already answered this in 1391, 1408, 1872 and 1937: the dignity sleeps in the blood of the last holder's daughters, not in a thirteenth-century cousin's American spelling.
