Crown officer on two seas
James, son of Henry and Bertred Mainwaring, served as Justiciar of Ireland and Justice of Chester. The family has moved from local socage into the machinery of the Angevin-Plantagenet state.
A later Hugh of Stratton Audley, of this wider kin, will receive a separate 1317 barony that devolves with Gloucester and Stafford and dies in the 1521 Buckingham attainder. That is a different creation. The 1313 Heighley barony is the living one.
James's descendants sit at Heighley waiting for a writ.
