Last of the male Audley line of Heighley
Nicholas, only surviving son of the Poitiers baron, died in 1391 without issue. The barony fell into its first abeyance among the heirs of his sister Joan Audley.
Joan had married Sir John Tuchet. Their son will be called out of abeyance. The surname on the writ changes. The dignity does not.
This is the legal lesson: a barony by writ can sleep among co-heirs and wake in another name. 1391 is the dress rehearsal for 1997.
