Chronicle of this board
Last holder; abeyance 1997
Richard Souter, 25th Baron Audley of Heleigh, died peacefully on 27 June 1997, aged 83, husband of Pauline and father of Patricia, Jennifer and Amanda. The barony fell into abeyance among those three daughters, now the Honourable Patricia McKinnon (b. 1946), the Honourable Jennifer Carrington (b. 1948) and the Honourable Amanda Souter (b. 1958).
Abeyance is not extinction. It is a three-way split of a writ that has already slept in 1391, 1497, 1631 and 1872, and has already been woken in 1408, 1512, 1678 and 1937.
The gold fret still exists as a legal object. The question is who the Crown will allow to pick it up — and on what evidence.
