Mary Anna Randolph Custis was born 1 October 1807 at Annefield, only surviving child of George Washington Parke Custis — grandson of Martha Washington and adopted son of George Washington — and Mary Lee Fitzhugh.

She married Lt. Robert E. Lee at Arlington House on 30 June 1831. She was an artist, read Latin and Greek, and chose the bedroom that looked over eleven kinds of rose. When Federal troops took Arlington in May 1861 she became a refugee. Among her wartime roofs was Audley, the Virginia house of her aunt Nelly Custis Lewis — the Audley name travelling with this sister branch.

She inherited Arlington and two other Virginia estates in 1857. After the war she lived in Lexington, in a wheeled chair, still working for crippled soldiers. She died 5 November 1873 and is buried beside her husband at Washington and Lee. This house is told in full because it is documented. It is not the barony.
